First Determination of the True Mass of Coronal Mass Ejections: A Novel Approach to Using the Two STEREO Viewpoints
نویسندگان
چکیده
The twin Sun Earth Connection Coronal and Heliospheric Investigation (SECCHI) COR2 coronagraphs of the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) provide images of the solar corona from two view points in the solar system. Since their launch in late 2006, the STEREO Ahead (A) and Behind (B) spacecrafts have been slowly separating from Earth at a rate of 22.5 degrees per year. By the end of 2007, the two spacecraft were separated by more than 40 degrees from each other. At this time, we began to see large-scale differences in the morphology and total intensity between coronal mass ejections (CMEs) observed with SECCHI-COR2 on STEREO-A and B. Due to the effects of the Thomson scattering geometry, the intensity of an observed CME is dependent on the angle it makes with the observed plane of the sky. From the intensity images, we can calculate the integrated line of sight electron density and mass. We demonstrate that is is possible to simultaneously derive the direction and true total mass of the CME if we make the simple assumption that the same mass should be observed in COR2-A and B. Solar Mini-Dimming Kinematics and Their Positive Correlations with Coronal Mass Ejections and Prominence
Solar mini-dimmings can be detect in the Extreme Ultra-Violet coronal eruptions. Here, sequences of 171_A images taken by Solar Dynamic Observatory/Atmospheric Imaging Assembaly on 13 June 2010 are used. In this special day, both of coronal mass ejection and prominence were observed. The average velocities and accelerations of 500 mini-dimmings which were detected using on feature based classif...

The large and small Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) and mini-CMEs are observed by the Extreme Ultra Violet Imager (EUVI) on the Solar Terrestrial Relation Observatory (STEREO). These eruption events are usually associated with dimming and wave-like brightenings. Here, the images of the full sun on 26 Apr 2008 with STEREO spacecraft (behind) with the cadences of 10 minutes and 150 seconds and pix...
متن کاملSTEREO observations of interplanetary coronal mass ejections and prominence deflection during solar minimum period
In this paper we study the occurrence rate and solar origin of interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) using data from the two Solar TErrestrial RElation Observatory (STEREO) and the Wind spacecraft. We perform a statistical survey of ICMEs during the late declining phase of solar cycle 23. Observations by multiple, well-separated spacecraft show that even at the time of extremely weak so...
متن کاملDetermining the Azimuthal Properties of Coronal Mass Ejections from Multi-spacecraft Remote-sensing Observations with Stereo Secchi
We discuss how simultaneous observations by multiple heliospheric imagers can provide some important information about the azimuthal properties of Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) in the heliosphere. We propose two simple models of CME geometry that can be used to derive information about the azimuthal deflection and the azimuthal expansion of CMEs from SECCHI/HI observations. We apply these two m...
متن کاملThree-dimensional reconstruction of coronal mass ejections using heliospheric imager data
Innovative techniques have been developed to extract three-dimensional (3-D) information on coronal mass ejections. Some techniques have only been available since the launch of the STEREO spacecraft, where geometry can be applied to white light observations from three different viewpoints. Another technique not necessarily requiring the multiple-viewpoint capabilities of STEREO involves heliosp...
